Mailcycle - Worker

An Android app for phones and boxphones in a device fleet that have no Google Play. It receives mail for the Mailcycle account it is paired with, and on Personal and above sends from the addresses assigned to it.

1. Download

Looking up the current build…

Check the SHA-256 against the downloaded file before installing it on many phones, for example with sha256sum on Linux or shasum -a 256 on macOS.

2. What it is for

Mailcycle - Worker pairs with a Mailcycle account as a Worker device and shows the mail sent to the addresses assigned to it. On Personal and above it can also send from those addresses. It has no account of its own, no sign-in and no payments.

Accounts are made in the Mailcycle app on the web at app.mailcycle.email. Create an account and an email address there, then pair the phone from it. How pairing works is on the Product page.

3. Install it

  1. Download the APK on the phone. When Android asks, allow Install unknown apps for the browser you downloaded it with.
  2. Open the downloaded file and install it.
  3. Open Mailcycle - Worker and allow Install unknown apps for it too, in Android's settings, so it can install its own updates.

From then on it updates itself: it checks for a new version about once an hour and installs it. On Android 11 and earlier, Android asks you to confirm each update.

4. For fleets

To give the app permission to install its updates on a phone over USB, without going through the settings screen:

adb
adb shell appops set email.mailcycle.worker REQUEST_INSTALL_PACKAGES allow
